Into The Night

Into the night.  In 22 days, the team of four  Team Suicide Prevention racers will start the 930 mile Race Across The West with an amazing support crew.  We start in Oceanside, California on June 14th and will race day and night to the finish line in Durango Colorado.  Last night, we embarked  on a 67 mile night training ride that included over 2,000 feet of climbing from Tulsa to Avant, Oklahoma along with our support crew to keep us safe.   The goal of this ride was to practice the safety protocols for riding and exchanges at night.  We will spend almost 30 hours of the race riding during the night with elevations approaching 7,000 feet.  As a racer, we like to go as fast as we can.  But riding at night either through the desert or thin mountain air poses challenges.  There's nothing as exhilarating and frightening as bombing down an aggressive hill descent  at 30+ mph on a mountain road in the darkness only lit by the headlamp on your bike and headlights of the follow safety vehicle behind you.  You can feel your  senses tingling ready to respond to potholes, obstacles,  or an animal running across the road. The downhills are the reward for the task and energy to summon your endurance to make it up the long and sometimes steep pitches on the climbs.  It's a delicate balance to maintain but safety is first.  Each team of two racers will ride six hour segments with several segments to include 8,000 feet of climbing.  These will be epic efforts of teamwork.  To make the time cutoff, we will spend our  entire estimated 58 hours  of race time using our two support vans as our team's home on wheels with " scheduled"  for fuel and food.  There's really nothing easy about this.  We put ourselves through this ordeal to get in the race to help saves lives.  The fact that you've read this much far is validation of our efforts.  Thank You!
